More than twenty years after joining Anglican Retirement Villages (ARV), Jane manages a staff of 21 physios, 1 OT and 2 Exercise Physiologists, across 9 locations at present. Previously Jane worked in the UK and NZ as well as in the Australian hospital system.
“I had support from ARV to do my Masters and have benefited from many in-house management development courses,” Jane says. “We also have a career path in place where expertise is developed and recognised.
Jane says, “ARV’s Christian philosophy matches my own ethics and standards as I assist residents and clients. ARV gives me a free hand; if I have a proposal to improve the quality of life and wellbeing for the residents, then I’m able to bring it to fruition.
“Working with older people provides excellent clinical experience. You have to be skilled in orthopaedic, cardiothoracic, neurological, woman’s health and continence, lymphoedema and chronic pain management. It’s never boring!”
ARV values physiotherapy in minimising work-related staff injuries. Jane’s team conducts risk assessments and provides ergonomic advice and manual handling training.
“I believe the not-for-profit sector delivers better care and services for older people. The resident is the focus, not shareholders. The public hospital system has been under great stress for many years. At ARV you work with great caring staff, developing your career within a multidisciplinary team, with satisfying work to do. I wouldn’t have stayed otherwise!”
